The hardest part of revising A-level maths is often not the maths. It is deciding what deserves your attention when the course feels enormous.
A useful plan needs to answer three questions: What have I covered? What can I retrieve without help? What should I do next?
Start with coverage, not confidence
Make a list of the syllabus areas and mark each one using evidence:
- Unseen: you have not studied it properly yet.
- Learning: you can follow examples but cannot reliably start alone.
- Practising: you can solve standard questions and are building range.
- Secure: you can solve mixed questions and explain your method.
“I remember this chapter” is not evidence. A short set attempted without notes is.
Use a weekly rhythm
A sustainable week might include:
- One session learning or repairing a weak idea.
- Two sessions of focused topic practice.
- One mixed session that forces you to choose methods.
- A short review of mistakes and unfinished questions.
The exact number of hours matters less than returning often enough that methods must be retrieved rather than merely recognised.
Record mistakes by cause
Do not write only “got question 4 wrong”. Classify the reason:
- I did not know the method.
- I knew the method but did not recognise when to use it.
- My algebra broke the method.
- I misread a condition or lost accuracy.
- I ran out of time.
Different causes need different responses. Re-reading a chapter will not fix rushed arithmetic, and doing ten similar questions may not fix method selection.
Let the plan change
Your plan is a hypothesis about what will improve your result. Review it every week using actual attempts. Move time towards weak, high-frequency topics and keep secure material alive with mixed retrieval.
The goal is not to complete the largest pile of paper. It is to arrive at the exam able to recognise, begin and finish unfamiliar-looking problems with a clear head.
